Hey there. I’m Justin Olshavsky. I love working on, and investing in, ambitious medical technologies that can meaningfully increase human healthspan.
I’m a founding partner of Pioneer Bio+Health Fund, where I invest in pre-seed and seed stage biotechnology, life science, medtech, and healthcare companies.
I’m also helping build Cradle Healthcare Company.
I previously co-founded Voyage Bio (YC S19), which was acquired by Penumbra (NYSE:PEN). At Voyage we built a device that uses cooling to reduce brain damage from stroke.
I’m a mechanical engineer and bioengineer by training, and have studied at UC Berkeley, UCSF, and Clemson.
My home town is Pittsburgh, PA. I stay connected to the startup ecosystem there as an entrepreneur-in-residence at Carnegie Mellon University.
I was 23 when I started Voyage as a graduate student at UC Berkeley/UCSF, and had to learn a lot of things about building medical technology companies along the way. I had many incredible mentors who helped me in this journey. I try to pay this forward by sharing these learnings, and I hope my time advising companies and my writing can help others shortcut their way through common problems. I think it is important to enable more people to build ambitious medical technology companies.
These podcasts are probably the best way to learn more about my background and interests:
